At dentalhouse, our Oakville dentists can help diagnose and treat jaw pain, headaches and other symptoms caused by TMJ Disorder.
Treating TMJ Disorder
Our dentists can test for and diagnose TMJ Disorder and provide you with a custom treatment plan to free you from painful symptoms.
Your TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) is a hinge connecting your jaw to your skull's temporal bones. It allows you to move your jaw up and down and side to side so you can speak and chew.
TMJ Disorder (or TMD) happens when issues in the facial muscles and jaw cause symptoms such as jaw pain, ringing in the ears and headaches. Left untreated, the disorder can lead to chronic pain, bone loss, changes in the gum tissue and loose teeth.
Often caused by misalignment of the jaw and/or teeth, other contributing factors may include genetics, the shape of your skull, injury or trauma to the jaw and airway issues.
TMJ Disorder Treatment
At dentalhouse our dentists can detect, diagnose and refer out for treatment for TMJ Disorder.
Treatment may include wearing a mouth guard to sleep to prevent grinding and clenching.
The dentist may also recommend physical therapy, relaxation techniques or a TENS machine (an electrical stimulus device) to encourage the jaw and facial muscles to relax.
In some cases, patients may need orthodontic treatment to help correct underlying issues with misalignment. Our dentists will work with you to create a treatment plan based on your specific requirements.
